Peer Math Coaching

Peer Math Coaching (PMC) helps students build stronger math skills and learn how to approach math with confidence. Experienced tutors provide support not just in solving problems, but also in learning how to study effectively, take organized notes, and understanding challenging concepts in college-level math courses and any types of math concepts. Starting Fall 2025, PMC now offers two specialized subjects to better meet student needs:

Calculus Foundations

Focuses on essential math skills used in Calculus and related courses. Students can review topics such as Algebra, Functions, Trigonometry, and Analytic Geometry to strengthen their problem-solving foundations. This service is also a great option for students who experience math anxiety or want to revisit material from earlier courses to feel more confident in their current classes. Peer tutors provide a supportive environment where students can rebuild foundational skills, refresh prior knowledge, and reduce anxiety about learning math.

Math in Chemistry

Designed for students taking General Chemistry who want to strengthen their math skills and apply them more confidently in chemistry. Sessions focus on topics such as dimensional analysis, unit conversions, logarithms, and graph interpretation, all directly connected to chemistry coursework.

  • To benefit most from your Math Coaching session, come prepared with topics or questions you would like to discuss and any relevant materials (such as textbooks, class notes, homework problems, or a syllabus).
  • You may also share questions or upload materials as attachments through when scheduling your session. This allows your tutor to review your materials ahead of time.

Make the Most of Your Session

  • Be punctual and respectful of your tutor’s time. If you need to cancel or reschedule, please use the link in your confirmation email as early as possible.
  • If you do not arrive by 25 minutes past the hour, your session may be given to another student, and you will need to reschedule.
  • If you miss more than three scheduled sessions, you may not be allowed to schedule further Math Coaching sessions for the semester.
  • Keep in mind that sessions are strictly limited to 50 minutes. Tutors will reserve the last few minutes of your session to review what you covered, help you set goals, and discuss next steps.

Academic Integrity

  • Math Coaching sessions are designed to help you grow as an independent learner and take ownership of your academic success.
  • Use your sessions to improve your math skills, learn new strategies, and build confidence in handling math challenges.
  • Tutors will not complete assignments, projects, or exams for you but will guide you in learning the necessary concepts and study methods. Learn more about USF Ethics and Integrity.

Prepare for Online Sessions

  • For the best online experience, download the Microsoft Teams app rather than using the browser version.
  • Find a quiet, distraction-free space for your session. While a café may be great for studying, it’s not ideal for video conferencing because of background noise. If you join from home or your dorm, let household members or roommates know your session time to minimize interruptions.
  • Join your online session 10 minutes early to check your internet connection and test your microphone and camera. You can also watch the tutorial video on how to test your audio and video on Microsoft Teams.
  • Have digital versions of your math materials ready to share during your session if you have not already uploaded them through Accudemia.
  • We encourage turning on your webcam to help your tutor better understand your questions and provide a more effective experience. We understand it might not always be possible due to your location, but using your video helps sessions run more smoothly.

Provide Feedback to Us

  • Your feedback helps us improve our services to better support USF students. Please share your thoughts on your Math Coaching experience through the , including what your tutor did well and any suggestions for improvement.
