Honors Course Profile: Art + The Environment

Honors courses help you apply your learning to real-world issues 鈥 and Professor Tina Piracci鈥檚 Art + the Environment class is one of the most impactful examples. This course empowers students to use creative design as a tool for environmental restoration.

Through sustainability-focused design, community partnerships and scientific innovation, students develop and 3D-print clay 鈥渙yster bricks鈥 鈥 porous, waste-free structures that support marine life and can be deployed along Florida鈥檚 vulnerable seawalls.

Students brainstorm, prototype and conduct fieldwork to create environmentally resilient structures strong enough to withstand hurricanes and inviting enough for oyster larvae to thrive. Along the way, they gain experience in interdisciplinary teamwork, citizen science and community engagement 鈥 skills they can carry into future workplaces and professional pursuits.
