The Department offers formal field schools and many students also pursue opportunities for field research with individual faculty members. Read more about what we offer below!

ARCHAEOLOGY FIELD SCHOOLS
The Department often conducts archaeological field opportunities in Florida, which
introduces students to a variety of archaeological methods including mapping, survey,
geophysical survey, testing, and small-scale excavation. Students also gain experience
working with the public.

Bioarchaeology Field School in Romania
Engage in osteological laboratory intensive training and analysis of exceptionally
well-preserved human remains, ranging from Adult and prenatal to preadult. Topical
areas include an overview of the bioarchaeology of children, growth and development,
weaning and dietary stress, juvenile trauma and pathology, as well as reconstruction
and interpretation of infant mortality.

Interdisciplinary Field School in Costa Rica
In collaboration with West Virginia University and California State University Chico,
students partake in interdisciplinary training in wastewater management systems and
resource recovery.

Conservation and Development Field School in Kenya
In partnership with the (KIPRE), students explore environmental threats such as deforestation, water scarcity, and climate change to find means to resolve conflict between humans and wildlife, issues of water scarcity and access, and competition among conservation stakeholders.

Ethnographic Field School in Morocco
This collaborative National Science Foundation (NSF) International Research Experience for Students (IRES) trains engineers and anthropologists to research and design socially and environmentally sustatinable and equitable systems. Argan nut oil production is a prime case of sustainable development of a product with environmental benefits that also contriutes to women's empowerment, education, and incomes.
