Students in the ESG course recently stepped beyond the classroom and into the world of applied sustainability during a field trip to Mosaic Biosciences on March 3rd. The visit offered a firsthand look at how innovation, science, and corporate strategy come together to address some of today鈥檚 most pressing global challenges: food security, resource efficiency, and environmental impact.

PCGS students discussing how Biosciences connects to Mosaic Sustainability
Mosaic Biosciences, part of The Mosaic Company, plays a key role in advancing agricultural sustainability through biological solutions that enhance fertilizer performance. During the visit, students were introduced to the company鈥檚 work with beneficial bacteria designed to improve nutrient use efficiency. By helping plants absorb nutrients more effectively, these solutions reduce fertilizer losses and support higher crop productivity, this is an approach that contributes to more sustainable food systems.
Through engaging presentations from Mosaic Bioscience leaders, students also gained a broader understanding of how the company integrates sustainability across its global operations. From improving fertilizer efficiency to aligning with long-term sustainability goals, the company鈥檚 strategy reflects the growing importance of innovation in addressing environmental challenges at scale.
Tour of the Laboratory
A highlight of the experience was the opportunity to tour the laboratory, where students saw firsthand how research and development translate into real-world applications. Observing the science behind the products, down to the microscopic level, helped bridge the gap between theory and practice, reinforcing concepts discussed in the classroom.

The visit culminated in a dynamic exchange between students and industry professionals. After reviewing Mosaic鈥檚 sustainability report, students presented their findings and recommendations directly to the company鈥檚 leadership team. This hands-on experience challenged them to think critically, communicate effectively, and apply their knowledge in a professional setting鈥攎irroring the type of work they may encounter in their future careers.
We extend our sincere appreciation to the Mosaic team for hosting our students and for their commitment to education and collaboration. Special thanks to Marleny Burkett-Cadena, R&D Advisor; Neil Beckingham, Senior Sustainability Manager; and Johana Cadena, Quality Control Manager, for sharing their expertise and providing valuable insights into the company鈥檚 work.
On the way back to campus, the group also stopped at Parkesdale Farm Market, where students enjoyed the market鈥檚 famous strawberry treats, ending the day on a sweet note after an enriching learning experience.
