Freshman Scholarship Awards

You have been awarded one or more of the following USF Scholarship(s) due to your high academic achievement in high school, residency status, and admission to USF:

  • Florida Benacquisto Scholarship
  • USF Golden Achievement Scholarship
  • USF Golden Achievement Tuition and Fee Waiver
  • USF Tradition of Excellence National Merit
  • USF Presidential Award
  • USF Directors Award
  • USF Scholars Gold Award
  • USF Green & Gold Presidential Waiver
  • USF Green & Gold Directors Waiver
  • USF Green & Gold Scholars Waiver
  • USF Green & Gold Talent Waiver

If the total amount of aid you receive from federal, state, and institutional sources, in addition to these scholarship(s), exceeds the estimated total cost of attendance (tuition, fees, room and board, books, transportation, and miscellaneous expenses), some portion of your aid will be reduced so that the total will not exceed the cost of attendance

Scholarships are awarded for up to eight (8) consecutive full-time semesters (fall/spring) in four (4) academic years of undergraduate coursework; or receipt of a bachelor鈥檚 degree, providing that renewal requirements are met. Recipients must enroll in the first fall semester of their admission, or the scholarship is forfeited.

*The Benacquisto Scholarship will pay for ten (10) consecutive full-time semesters (fall and spring semesters only) or upon the receipt of your bachelor鈥檚 degree.

Receiving your Scholarship

For your scholarship to be paid, you must register as a full-time (minimum 12 undergraduate USF credit hours) degree-seeking undergraduate student in each term the funds are received, excluding summer

  • Enrolling in the minimum number of credit hours (12 credits per fall and spring semester) may not be sufficient to renew your scholarship(s), see Renewal Requirements.
    • The full-time requirement may include graduate course(s) if you are enrolled in a degree program that includes graduate-level coursework (e.g., Honors College, Architecture, College of Medicine, etc.); however, your scholarship will not cover the entire graduate course fees as awards are specific to undergraduate charges. Specifically, the Green and Gold Waivers (Presidential, Directors, Scholars) and the USF Golden Achievement Tuition and Fee Waiver cannot be used toward graduate courses.
    • If you reach the graduate level of an accelerated degree program that leads to a Master鈥檚 degree, you will be required to provide documentation from your academic advisor to the Office of Financial Aid to verify your status as a graduate student in an accelerated program in order to be paid the remaining term(s).
    • All scholarship recipients participating in Study Abroad experiences must complete the Study Abroad Enrollment Contract (SAE) before their departure to be reviewed for payment eligibility. Courses must count towards your unsatisfied degree major requirements.
    • Tradition of Excellence National Merit, Florida Benacquisto Scholarship, and/or USF Golden Achievement recipients are eligible for a one (1) semester USF Passport Scholarship of $2,000 for participating in a USF-sponsored Study Abroad program experience. Full-time enrollment is not required to receive the USF Passport Scholarship. This award must be used toward a full semester abroad experience and courses must count towards your unsatisfied degree major requirements.
    • Any awards from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation are included with the full USF National Merit package (Florida Benacquisto or USF Golden Achievement).
    • Exceptions to the full-time requirement may be considered for graduating seniors who complete the Undergraduate Admissions Scholarships: Less than Full-time Graduating Seniors (USGR) form.
  • Scholarships are disbursed after the end of the drop/add period each semester as a payment to your student account.
  • Green & Gold Waivers assist you with undergraduate out-of-state tuition and fees at USF. You must remain classified as a non-Florida resident for tuition purposes to receive this waiver.
    • The amount credited to your account will vary based upon enrolled USF undergraduate credit hours and the maximum term amount specified by your award.
    • These awards credit in the form of a partial-to-full undergraduate out-of-state tuition waiver, therefore, these awards cannot be received for any non-USF course(s) or other charges to the student account.
    • Students are not charged out-of-state tuition for study abroad courses, so this award cannot be used for study abroad.
If you are awarded another out-of-state tuition waiver, it may combine with your Green & Gold waiver, but the total amount received cannot exceed the out-of-state tuition charges.
    • This award will be paid in the summer term for USF course(s) to assist with expenses related to USF courses required to meet the Renewal Requirements.
    • A summer Green & Gold waiver payment does not count against the eight (8) semester limit.
    • The Green & Gold Talent Waiver also requires you to remain classified as a major within the College of The Arts.
    • The Green and Gold Waivers (Presidential, Directors, Scholars) and the USF Golden Achievement Tuition and Fee Waiver cannot be used toward graduate courses. For example, students after the second year of the five-year Master of Architecture program or those in accelerated programs such as 7-year B.S./M.D. or Pharm.D. programs.
    • The USF Golden Achievement Tuition and Fee Waiver is a combination of an out-of-state waiver and an in-state tuition waiver. Should you decide to attend summer classes at USF the out-of-state portion will be applied, and you will be responsible for the payment of in-state tuition and fees. This summer out-of-state waiver payment will not count against the 8-semester limit. Should you update your residency from out-of-state to Florida resident while enrolled at USF your scholarship will adjust and cover the full cost of attendance for a Florida resident, as the out-of-state waiver will no longer apply.
  • After all institutional charges on the student account have been paid in full, any remaining amount will be refunded to the student. Waivers paid under the per semester limit due to the total credit hours enrolled by a student cannot be refunded or transferred to another semester.
  • International students must provide documentation to the Office of International Services to document/confirm their citizenship/visa status. If documentation is not received, the scholarship(s) will be canceled.

Renewal Requirements

You must earn 30 USF credit hours during each academic year (fall/spring/summer) and maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA for USF coursework and you are expected to be paid in consecutive semesters (fall/spring).

  • Only USF credit hours will count towards the earned hour renewal requirement.
  • Enrollment at another school will not count for renewal purposes. Exceptions may be made for USF-sponsored study abroad, internships, and co-operative education programs via an Undergraduate Scholarship Petition if needed to meet renewal requirements.
  • Grade Forgiveness/Repeating courses may help your GPA but will reduce your earned hours required for renewal.
  • Advanced Placement credits, dual enrollment, or transfer credits from other colleges/universities are not considered toward your annual earned hour renewal requirement.
  • At the end of an academic year (fall/spring/summer), students who fail to meet the scholarship renewal requirements will forfeit the scholarship(s) for any subsequent terms.

For the Florida Benacquisto scholarship only, students must meet the renewal requirements as established by the > see the Benacquisto Scholarship Program (FAQ). For automatic renewal, an award recipient will have:

  • Earned credit for all hours enrolled by the end of the regular drop/add period each term.

Renewal Evaluation, Notifications, and Undergraduate Scholarship Petitions

Academic performance will be evaluated for renewal at the end of each spring semester, and you will be notified of the result by email.

  • If you meet the renewal criteria at the end of the spring, your scholarship will automatically renew for the following academic year or until you have received your degree or eight (8) semesters, whichever comes first.
  • If you do not meet the requirements at the end of spring, you may use the summer term to meet the academic renewal requirements.
    • Your grades and/or earned hours may be changed after a renewal evaluation has occurred due to missing grades, grade corrections, grade replacement, etc.
    • Re-evaluation of your renewal eligibility will occur after your academic history is updated and/or after the end of the summer term.
    • If you are not paid, consecutive semesters (fall/spring), but you earn a minimum of 30 USF credit hours and maintain a 3.0 USF GPA by the end of the summer semester then you may renew but will forfeit any unpaid semester(s).
    • If you are notified that you do not meet the academic renewal requirements, you may submit an Undergraduate Scholarship Petition if:
      • You had a documented illness or emergency beyond your control during the academic year that affected your academic performance.
      • You participated in USF-sponsored study abroad, internship, or co-operative education program with appropriate documentation.
    • Any suspension or grades due to academic dishonesty resulting in non-compliance for scholarship renewal will not be considered in the appeal process.
