My programs of research focus on speech intelligibility in noise, spatial hearing, and cochlear implant processing. In the Auditory Perception and Cognition Lab, we work to understand how individuals with normal hearing are able to 'solve the cocktail party problem', while those with hearing impairment, and cochlear implant users in particular, struggle. We use behavioral approaches, as well as a number of neuroimaging technologies, to better understand the mechanisms underlying 'spatial selective attention', which refers to the ability to selectively attend to one sound source and successfully ignore or filter out others.
