Peter Kotiuga offers courses in ancient Greek and Roman literature, culture, language, and history. In each of his classes, he aims to challenge students to recognize the modernity in antiquity and to reckon with the vibrant (and often messy) complexities of ancient life. His research interests span ancient Greek and Roman epic, satire, mythology, and linguistics, and his long-term book and database project constitutes the first blended, modular, and exhaustive study of epic verse rhythm. His 2024 dissertation demonstrates that when Homer describes a speaker as 鈥済entle,鈥 鈥渉arsh,鈥 etc., the character鈥檚 speech rhythm (or 鈥渇low鈥) reflects that description. Beyond archaic epic verse rhythm, he is interested in the role of musicality in poetry and how traditional thoughts and ideas morph and reappear across generations.

Dr. Kotiuga comes to Florida after spending most of his life in New England, so he is working on tamping down his sarcasm and saying hello to people in the grocery store.
