Lime green tassel to debut at Bellini College鈥檚 inaugural commencement

The USF Bellini College of Artificial Intelligence, Cybersecurity and Computing鈥檚 lime green tassel will make its debut with the college鈥檚 inaugural graduating class at its fall commencement this month.

Academic regalia, including tassel and hood colors, is a long-standing tradition among colleges and universities. Colors are assigned by discipline, with engineering students typically wearing orange, those earning a business wearing drab, and education majors sporting a powder blue tassel or hood trim. Lime green will now represent the Bellini College鈥檚 degree disciplines that include computer science, computer engineering, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity and information technology.

These academic regalia traditions evolved from the apparel originally worn by monks and students in the 11thand 12th centuries to keep warm while studying. The colors are found on undergraduate and master鈥檚 tassels and on master鈥檚 and doctoral hoods on the velvet edging.

As one of the first institutions to formally introduce lime green into academic regalia, the color became the practical choice to establish the college鈥檚 visibility among the sea of graduates and further define its emphasis on modern, technology-driven fields.

鈥淚 think the new tassel color is a great way to set us apart from other programs,鈥 said Julia Kelly, who is graduating with a degree in information technology. 鈥淚t鈥檚 bright, it鈥檚 different and really stands out. It makes our class feel unique. I am also excited to be part of this first class of graduates to have the Bellini College name on my degree.鈥
