Nitesh Chawla

CSE Alumn., Nitesh Chawla, PhD., was elected as a 2024 AAAI Fellow

CSE Alumni and Professor at the University of Notre Dame, Nitesh Chawla, has been honored as a Fellow by the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AAAI). The AAAI is a society which promotes the responsible research and use of Artificial Intelligence.

In February of each year, their membership nominates individuals who have made significant, sustained contributions to the field of artificial intelligence. Their Selection Committee carefully reviews and generally selects 510 new Fellows each year.

A highly competent Data Scientist and Artificial Intelligence Researcher, Professor Chawla took his PhD in Computer Science from USF in 2002, and was advised by Distinguished University Professor Lawrence Hall. Nitesh holds concurrent faculty appointments in Notre Dames College of Science and College of Business, teaching classes such as AI and Social Good and leading research projects. Besides his most recent Fellowship at the AAAI, he is also a fellow of the Association of Computing Machinery (ACM) and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).

The AAAI specifically recognized his foundational work in learning from imbalanced data and graphs, as well as interdisciplinary applications of AI. Imbalanced Data is a set with skewed proportions, where in some extreme examples the majority is 99% of the data. An example may be the amount of hydrogen and helium in the universe compared to other elements.

Professor Chawla will be formally honored at the 38th AAAI Conference on Artificial Intelligence in Vancouver, Canada.
